Four Freedoms to Compete in 2021 Australian Open
The 2021 Australian Open begins on Sunday, Feb 7, and and will culminate with the Women’s Championship on February 19 and the Men’s Championship on February 20. Every match will be available across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPN+ and ESPN3. This year, four Freedom players will take the court in Melbourne, including World No. 4 Sofia Kenin.
What to Watch For:
- Sofia Kenin, who made her Freedoms debut last season, seeks to defend her 2020 Australian Open Title victory and win her second career grand slam. Kenin’s first round opponent is Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis. Here is a look at Kenin’s projected road to defending the title: Inglis, Sevastova, Vekic (28), Konta (13), Svitolina (5), Barty (1) and Halep (2).
- Taylor Fritz, the 2020 World TeamTennis Male MVP, is the No. 27 seed in this year’s Australian Open. Fritz will face Albert Ramos Viñolas in the first round. A potential clash with 2020 Australian Open Champ and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic awaits Fritz should both stars advance to the third round.
- Doubles specialist Caroline Dolehide is expected to play with fellow American Shelby Rogers.
- Fabrice Martin and his long-standing doubles partner Jeremy Chardy hope to advance past the third round in Melbourne for the first time in their careers.
